Hello everyone

I’m sat in my kitchen listening to some tunes and I thought I’d share some with you.

The last couple of weeks has been great for Big Big Love with plenty of enquiries and confirmations.  It means that we’ll be busy boys over June to September playing you the very best in House, Indie, Pop, Garage and everything else.  I say Garage as I’ve got a couple who want a Garage section.  Can’t wait!!

Over the last few posts I’ve been looking into some of my favourite tunes over a number of genres.  This time round I’ll be putting up the best of what I’ve been listening to at the moment (i.e. cooking music).

Over the last couple of weeks I’ve been trying to perfect the Thai Green Curry.  I’ve searched high and low for the finest lemongrass, fish sauce and coriander Leeds has to offer.  It turns out it wasn’t the ingredients I needed but the tuneage on in the kitchen while making that mattered.  Anyway this is the one that did it.  Enjoy!

When poaching a fairly larged sized river cobbler you need to make sure you get the timing just right.  Setting the old alarm clock helps but for me there’s no better judge of a tender piece of white fish succulence than Flashmob’s tune Brick House.  Get yourself down to the fishmongers, download the new Defected Miami album and whack on tea.  You won’t be disappointed.

I can’t get enough of this next one.  Smit has been banging on about M83 for ages but I couldn’t get into their last album.  This new one however is a different tale for me.  There simply is no better tune to roll out ravioli dough out to than this.  Enjoy the fruits of my labour.

I can’t really relate this one to my cooking exploits.  It definitely would fall into my Helen’s “too hard for tea” choices.  This is off the Miami Noize 11 compilation from Boys Noize’s record label.  Check it out as it os fantastic.

The last one I only downloaded this morning when I was waiting for my toast in the toaster.  Please somebody let me play this!  Love it.

Anyway hope you enjoyed listening to my favourite tunes at the moment.  Show me some big big love!!!!

Oi Oi

Hope all are well.  I’m on my last day Big Big Love of a week off work.  It’s been good to know what morning lie ins and al fresco drinking are like again.  We’re off to Alton Towers tomorrow with all the Leeds & Preston crew then I’m out with the Bolton boys in Manchester.  It should be good.
This blog is all about the Indie music.  With the exception of Queen & U2 in my early teens this is really got me into music thanks to John, Matt, Bally, Sam, Anders & the Evening Session.  Big shout outs to you guys.  These are some of my favourite Indie tunes with a wedding party edge to them.
The first one is Whatever by Oasis.  This was probably the first tune I’d heard from that made me properly listen to them.  For the next 3 or 4 years (along with everyone else) I was hooked on them.  I still think this is the best one though.  Notice Liam Gallagher’s proper singing voice on this.  Smit and I had the misfortune to see their last ever gig at V2010.  It was appalling.  Their version of I Am The Walrus must have had John Lennon spinning in his grave.  Anyway hope you enjoy this version from Jools Holland in 1996.
Next up is a band that I confess I’ve never massively been into.  They were the Jake’s Bar house band for month’s when we used to go out on a Friday night accompanied by Robbie Wells & Chris Wood’s violent pogo-ing in and around.  Like I say I’ve never really been into them but I saw them play at Live 8 and they were superb, this being the best one.  It’s In The Morning by Razorlight.
This was the band I watched at Glastonbury rather than Stevie Wonder and they were great.  If you ever get a chance to see Empire Of The Sun then go and see them for their stage show if nothing else.  Very theatrical and very very loud.  I always get a good reaction whenever I play this.  A great tune.
Radiohead are acknolowledged as being the best and most popular indie in Britain at the moment.  They’ve definitely been the most consistent although I confess I’m not the biggest fan of The Kings Of Limbs (the remix album is much better).  One band I think could be better than them though is Foals.  I’ve seen them play 3 times now and have nailed it each time.  Both albums are ace but Total Like Forever is a classic already.  Not one bad song on it.  In honour of the old and new are 2 classics from them both.
Radiohead aren’t really standard wedding music so it’s a struggle to find something to play at night events.  This is “Just” although more downbeat selections would be “Weird Fishes/Arpeggi”, “Fake Plastic Trees” & “Videotape”.
This is “This Orient” by Foals.  IF YOU HAVEN’T ALREADY YOU NEED TO BUY THIS ALBUM! Shout outs to Johnboy!!
I can’t get enough of this next tune at the moment.  The Rapture brought out Echoes nearly 10 years ago which had some belters on esp.  The House Of The Jealous Lovers (check out the Cosmos mix).  I never really bothered with them after that as I thought they’d gone off.  This however is a modern classic. 3 mins 54 in is ace ace ace!!  I’m still not sure about the new album but this one stands up there with the best (IMO).  Massive shout outs to Sam and Smit for this one!!
I couldn’t believe after seeing this next video that The Killers are from Las Vegas.  I think this sounds like a classic British indie tune and I think the video goes really well with it.  This video was replaced with a more American influenced Anton Corbijn version later on which I think represents well what happened to The Killers.  I think their record company got heavily involved in their sound.  Anyway this tune is top.
Bloc Party should have been much bigger than they were.  I think was due to the 2nd album being so spectacularly bad!!!  It’s mystifying as Silent Alarm is a truly brilliant album.  This is Positive Tension and its ace!!
LCD Soundsystem are ace.  Every album they’ve done has been brilliant especially Sound Of Silver.  We’ve seen them a few times at Leeds Uni and supporting Daft Punk (ace ace ace) but the best performance was a few years ago at Glastonbury.  Although Daft Punk Are Playing In My House isn’t my favourite this performance was amazing esp. with the sun going down on the Sunday night.  Check out Pat Mahony on the drums.  He did a disco mix with James Murphy (the singer) for Fabric a few years ago (http://www.fabriclondon.com/store/catalog/product/view/id/80/s/fabriclive-36/category/8/) which was top.  I’ve just realised that I’ve not got it on my computer so I’ve just downloaded it again.
If you’ve never heard anything by LCD then go out and buy the lot.
If I could see myself in a band it would be LCD otherwise it would be Primal Scream.  I once made it into an NME review of a Primal Scream concert when I was at uni for slating them mid gig.  They’d already gone off once as somebody had thrown a glass at them.  I lost it the 2nd time they went off.  Before all this though I heard the 5 best live tunes I’d every heard.  They were that good!  Anyway, this one is off one of their less successful albums Give Out But Don’t Give Up called Call On Me.
Anyway I could be here all day so I’ll just leave you with 5 more less party driven but still ace tunes.
I’m been having a roam around the internet looking at wedding blogs.  This one is pretty good with loads of good unique wedding photo shots (http://www.rockmywedding.co.uk/).  I can’t find much on wedding dj’ing though.
Anyway I’m off.  I’ll see you soon.  I’m looking forward to Martin’s tunes hopefully coming soon.

Hi Everyone – Martin here. Last week Simon gave us his top ten Hip Hop tunes, and although i have to admire his taste my selection would be slightly different. So here goes.. In no particular order. First off i would definitly have to agree with Simon that Dead Prez’s Hip Hop is a great tune and should feature in any Top Ten i won’t be including this as it would be a cop out. Please be aware most of these tunes contain swears, as is often the case with Hippity Hoppings

Jurassic 5 - Jayou

Back in those hazy college days i got into Hip Hop proper via the mighty Jurrasic Five and their first album the Jurrasic 5 LP (or J5 as its known in some circles). Every track on this is brilliant and a real tour de force of mid nineties alternative Hip Hop but for me the stand out track has got to be Jayou. We used to go to the Unit in Sheffield for the NY Sushi Bike Shed every Tuesday with Shaun and Kev (word) and we were known (to each other) as the Sheffield B Boys (ahem). £1 bottles of Stella and a packed dance floor in the sweatiest club known to South Yorkshire made for a great night out.  Jurassic 5, as im sure you are aware consisted of 4 MC’s and two of the best DJ’s in the world (Cut Chemist & DJ Nu-Mark). Chali 2na (great name) has one of the most distinctive vocal styles in Hip Hop to date.

Pharoahe Monch – Simon Says

Another song from the Ny Sushi days is this monster of a tune. Using a sample of the Godzilla theme tune that has been re-used by loads of tunes since it never failed to get everyone in the club jumping up and down. It really gave people something to do when dancing - particularly pointing at the girls dancing on the stage during the rude bits.. I think it’s meant to be taken with a pinch of salt and quite sarcastic in its lyric content.

Mos Def - Ms. Fat Booty

Mos Def is by far one of the coolest people in Hip Hop circles. he has managed to cross the genres of soul, Hip Hop and Rock many times and sometimes all at the same tune. His first album, Black On Both Sides is a great album and if you havent heard it you really are missing out. you may recognise him from other media too, he is out spoken on many issues and has appeared in numerous films. Have a listen to this tune and try to not listen to again immediately afterwards. This is Real Hip Hop.

De La Soul feat. Redman – Oooh!

De la Soul invented flower power Hip Hop way back in the day and are still going to this day. They recently collaborated with Gorillas on a couple of albums and really gave those albums the edge. After a few years away from the scene in the late 90′s they returned with this tune that somehow missed out on becoming as renowned and recognised at it should have been at the time. Check out ‘Oooh’ and its crazy ass video…

Busta Rhymes - Turn It Up, fire It Up Remix

The Hardest man in Hip Hop according to ‘Shauny Shaun Shaun’ (Triple S) released a remix of one of his album tracks that far surpasses the original. With a brilliant sample from the Night Rider Theme written by Stu Phillips it really compliments Busta Rhymes’ fast lyrical style. It was all over the radio at the time and still sounds great today.

Jay-Z - Girls, Girls, Girls

I don’t really rate the Jigger Man, i think he thinks he’s a lot coller than he actually is and most of his music is wack (ahem) but this little beauty, the second single from his album The Blueprint is, in my opinion the greatest song he has done. A very simple song with a very simple chorus it stands apart for having a fantastic sample from ‘There’s nothing in this world that can stop me from loving you’by Tom brock that never gets dull. This song was originally produced for Ghostface Killah of the Wu Tang Clan believe it or not (according to Wikipedia)

RZA - My Lovin’ Is Digi

RZA (‘short’ for Razor or Ruler Zig-Zag Ziggelar) is the brain of the mighty Wu-Tang Clan. He produce most of their work (if not all of it) and is also a fantastic rapper and often can be seen in bits parts in films where he usually plays very funny characters. In the late 90′s he released an album as his alter ego (!) Bobby Digital. This, for me, is the stand out tune and illustrates RZA’s unparalleled ear for a good sample. If i have one critiscism of this tune it is that is not long enough.

Crash Crew – High Power Rapp

A song from Detroit way back in the early eighties. You have definitely heard this tune in some form or another over the years.. Listen out for a line from another tune in this list, Girls Girls Girls by Jay Z (pretty much the entre chorus is lifted from this tune) and the Kazoo section from Jurrasic 5 – Concrete Schoolyard (which was in Simon’ Top Ten). A real originator of the Hip Hop genre with nods to this tune from everyone from Beastie Boys to more modern acts.

Doug E fresh ft. The Get Fresh Crew & Slick Rick - The Show

When i was 8 my sister gave me a CD she had got from Readers Digest or Britannia music club entitled ‘Hip Hop and Rapping in the House. Most of the songs on this compilation went over my head but this one stuck with me for ever. And i kept noticing things from it in songs over the years, especially the ‘Fresh’ scratch. I later read that Doug E Fresh has claimed to have invented Beat Boxing, although i have also heard differently. I also read that Debbie Harry claims to have popularised Rapping by ripping off Freddy Fresh on Rapture. She didn’t even bother to change his lyrics even when they included his name.

The Sugarhill Gang - Rapper’s Delight

The song that started it all. enough said..

One more….

This is one of the best songs ever recorded. Considering the Video is done in one take i think it’s unsurpassed in terms of technique. The Beastie Boys have kind of lost their edge over the years. I think the best album they did was Hello Nastyas its more random and Hip Hop influenced than the earlier stuff.. Anyway im going to leave you with this one..

Beastie Boys - Three MC’s and One DJ

So.. What did we miss? What are your favourite Hip Hop tunes? Please leave us your comments below and let us know which top tens you want next..

Hi

Welcome back to the big big blog.  I’ve had a busy couple of weeks on the booking front.  Can’t wait to get back djing soon.  Please make sure you take full advantage of the Spotify playlist by updating it with your favourite tunes.  It’s our best way of finding out how you want your night to go.

I’m also hearing that my good friends John & Melanie are busy with bookings and orders.  Check them out at Perfect Wedding Videos & Photo’s blog at http://www.perfectweddingvideos.co.uk/wedding-photography-cheshire/ and the Ivory Tuesday blog at http://www.ivorytuesday.com/.

On the music front stuff thats caught my attention recently has been the new Usher tune produced by Diplo.  One of my mates is giving me grief for getting into an RnB phase so this one’s for him.

The last tune on Martin’s new mix is a fantastic tune.  I can’t get it out of my head.  It’s the Daphni mix of Modular Pursuits by No Boundries.  If you don’t like it at first give it a few more chances.  I love it!!

This time around I thought I’d share a selection of my favourite hip hop tunes.  This one is always likely to spark a fair bit of debate so let me know your thoughts.

The first one is easy for me.  Amazing album.  Shame out his live performance at The Big Chill last year. Stick with the bad language as this tune is ACE!!!!  Nicky Minaj’s rap.  Nuff said.

Again, the next one is easy to think of.  Jurassic 5 first album is a true hip hop classic.  Every tune a minter.  This one sticks out though.  Concrete Schoolyard.

Moving into the true classic tunes now.  3 minutes 48 seconds in it cements itself as one of the greatest.  Eric B & Rakim with Coldcut on the mix.

I played David’s 40th back last year and hip hop was the only thing that would keep them all on the dancefloor.  This one especially.  LL Cool J with  Mama said knock you out.

Next up is Roots Manuva.  These days there’s loads of UK hip hop around.  This came out when there hardly wasn’t any.  Rapping about pints of bitter and cheese on toast it’s Witness.

And if I play that then I have to play this.  Martin & John with their take on the same tune over Tinie Tempah.  3000 hits and rising.  Booyaka Booyaka Booyaka!

I don’t know if these next guys were one hit wonders.  It may not even have been a hit but its a great tune.  It is Hip Hop by Dead Prez.  Please somebody ask me to play this.  Its ace.

I’m leaving myself open for this next one but I love it and it does generally get people on the dancefloor.  Fatman Sccop with Be Faithful.

Another great UK hip hop tune (to some) is Safe From Harm by Massive Attack,  Enjoy.

Last up is Mike (Keith) Skinner.  Yes he’s garage but there aren’t many rappers better than this lad.  An out and out musical genius.

There you go.  Let me know what you think,

Massive shout outs to Mike & Jill and their engagement last weekend.  Finally, another 6 day stag do is on the cards.  Berlin anyone?

Also, congratulations to one of my close mates who’s girlfriend is expecting later this year.  I don’t know who he’s told yet so I’m keeping to schtum.

Anyway much love and see you soon.

Hi All

It’s been a while since the last blog.  I’ve had a mental start to the year with work, leisure & illness.  I’m hopefully back to normal service now so the blog returns.  I’m also bang up for getting out and about at parties and weddings across Leeds and Manchester with Big Big Love playing some great tunes new & old.

Since the last blog I’ve also been listening to some great music.  First is the new Fabric mix from DJ Sneak.

He’s playing the Faversham at the Garden Party at the beginning of May.  Very tempting.

Next up is a tune Martin played at Fran’s leaving party.  I’ve never heard of this guy but this tune is top.

You can also hear it on Martin’s new mix.

I also did a mix while I was off work in Jan.  Its my bouncing off the walls mix all played from under a blanket heavily sedated.

From now on on each of my blogs I’m going to put up a top 10 of musical things I love.  I’m a massive geek so I’ve got most of these lists in my head anyway.  As I’m talking about Big Big Love mixes then I might as well give you my top 10 mixes.  I’ve been listening to and making mixes for well over 10 years so I’ve got a pretty good idea about what I like.  What I think is good and bad.

1. First up is a resident advisor mix from 2007 by Joris Voorn.  Around this time he was moving from playing fairly hard techno to the more housier stuff he plays now.  This mix moves seamlessly to a point from (36 mins) Ripperton’s Farra to a mix that blends 3 or 4 tunes together using one Radioslave remix.  Its absolute genius and a worthy start to this list.

2.  A tune that features on the Joris Voorn mix features very heavily on the next one.  Over the last 10 years Josh Wink released 3 Profound Sound mixes.  The last one was ok but was a total rip off of a Ministry Of Sound one he did around the same time (song by song).  PF2 was released when his minimal techno sound was really getting going.  A real highlight on the album was Oakish.  I heard this tune when walking passed the dance tent at Glastonbury a few years ago and completely lost it.  The best mix though was the first one.  Released in 1999 its Josh Wink at his uncompromising best.  Hard hard tech funk house.  This for me is the highlight on the album… DJ Dozia Pop Kulture into Kathy Lee.  Ace!!

3.  When I was at university all I really listened to was Leftfield, David Bowie, Armand Van Helden & Roni Size.  Just after finishing uni John told me about a set he’d done for the Breezeblock.  On listening to it it blew me away.  I don’t confess to be the biggest Drum n Bass fan but I’ve never heard a better dnb mix than this (although I guess Martin would disagree).  Check this out.

4.  I’ve been subscribing to Fabric’s mix series now since 2004 (http://www.fabriclondon.com/fabricfirst/about) and it has a habit of consistently bringing out quality mixes over many styles (Caspa & Rusko – Dubstep, Martyn – UK Funky, Ricardo Villalobos – experimental minimal).  The first one I heard (and still probably the best one) was from Jacques Lu Cont.  He blends 80′s pop, classical music, 90′s grunge & house seamlessly.  Another work of a mixing genius.

5.  Thinking about the next album I think may have had a profound change on my life.  The first time I heard it was on West Street in Sheffield with Helen and Martin.  I stopped what I was doing and asked the guy in the shop who it was.  2ManyDjs.  I’d never heard of them.  We saw them at The Big Chill in August last year and they blew me away.  The same tried and tested stuff but the quality of the tunes & visuals were mind blowing.  So many classics.  As Heard On Radio Soulwax pt 2.

6.  Next up is a podcast from a couple of years by Riton.  The Ritontime blog produced an amazing mix of 60-70 tunes in 40 minutes.  Blending Prince with Dancehall this mix is ace and is always on my ipod on my way to work.

7.  During the first week of uni I had my student loan burning a hole in my pocket so I went out and bought Bowie 69-74 and this album.  Brother Gonna Work It Out by The Chemical Brothers starts off with a blaxploitation soundtrack the moves between Detroit Techno, Hip-Hop, Acid House and a number of Chemical Brothers remixes sometimes playing 4 or 5 tunes in one go.  Another work of art and again another album that is on repeat.

8.  Around the same time a very similar album in terms of style but heavily influenced by Hip-Hop and Breakbeat was The Dirtchamber Sessions by The Prodigy.  This album has the lot.  I don’t think there is one bad tune on this.

9.  Body Language vol 8 by Modeselektor is one of my favourite mixes from the last few years.  They mainly play quirky bass heavy electronic music but on this mix there’s all that plus Missy Elliot, Busta Rhymes and many more.  Brilliant energy and great to listen to very very loud.  You need this album in your life.

10.  Last up is Fabric 33 by Ralph Lawson.  This album is Ralph Lawson at his best.  Quality 2020 releases from beginning to end.  This album came out just before Helen, Smit and I went to Berlin.  Ralph was playing at Panaroma Bar so we went and what a night.  I think he played nearly every tune off this album.  Praise by Art Of Tones has to be the highlight of a brilliant album.

Anyway that is it.  Hope you enjoyed everything I’ve had to say.

Hello everyone

The blog keeps on coming and so do the tunes.

I’ve just bought my new piece of dj equipment. My new kontrol s2 is amazing! No more purchasing for some time. I was doing my finances the other day and I’m effectively skint (fee skint) til September when I’m off to Ibiza. I’ve never been before so I can’t wait. I’m keeping my fingers crossed hoping that Aphex Twin plays the closing party again. We’re also having a script there as we’re hiring a massive villa. All are welcome (apart from sleeping as there’s no room).

Also on the subject of my finances one thing that will do it no good is going out. At the moment I’m torn between James Zabiela at Mint and Kink, Julio Bashmore & Joy Orbison at Sankeys (I prefer the latter). Any ideas?  Check out Existence by Kink & The Shrew Would Have Cushioned The Blow by Joy Orbison.

One of my favourite mix albums of last year was the Dave Clarke fabric cd.  Typical Dave Clarke really.  Hard as owt and great tune selection.  Best tune on it is Aufstand by Gessafelstein.  There’s absolutely no way I can play this at a party but it’s still a great tune.

Last thing.  I’ve finally got round to pricing up a package for parties.  It’s £245 for the soundsystem, lighting rig & me for 5 hours and a selection of requests.  Let me know if you’re interested.

Hi Everyone

It’s been some time since I’ve lasted posted anything.  One of my new years resolutions is to make sure I’m doing more of it.  Hope you’re enjoying the content up to now.  I’ve been sidelined with illness at the moment so there’s no better time to get some stuff out there.
This time round I thought I’d share what were my musical highs and lows of last year.
Two of my favourite bands released albums during the year but I was pretty disappointed in what came out to be honest.  Although they weren’t great albums there were a few great tracks on them. Bon Iver’s For Emma Forever is probably my favourite album of the last 5 years.  Although their self titled album for me didn’t quite reach the same level, Holocene is a great tune.

One track which didn’t make it on the album is Woods from the earlier released Blood Bank EP.  It’s also sampled on Lost In The World on the last Kanye West album.  Well, it’s the same tune but with a hip hop beat and a rap on it.  Check them both out here.

The other album was King Of Limbs by Radiohead.  I was hoping for another In Rainbows but, as is normally the case with Radiohead, expect the unexpected.  This was my favourite Bloom.
.
My favourite album of year was definitely SBTRKT by SBTRKT.  Weird lyrics, atmospheric melodies and beats and well chosen vocals spans Trip Hop, RnB, Bass and House.  Top album.  Check them out at Leeds Uni at the end of Feb.  These are 2 tracks off an album of belters.

I’ll be djing a few time over the next few months.  We’ll be having the first Script of the new year at The Lounge in Leeds.
Smit is also having a flat warming in Manchester at some point before Easter.  We’ll let you know where it is and when it will be.  I’ll also be having a Big Big Love launch party in Leeds soon too.  Again, I’ll let you all know when I do.
I’ve put out a new mix on Soundcloud giving you an idea of the kind of Script music I’m playing at the moment.  Please give it a listen and share on Facebook & Twitter to spread the word. http://soundcloud.com/wecanandwewill/scripts-bouncing-off-the-walls
This is one of my favourite tunes at the moment that features on the mix.

Another of my favourite tunes of the year is from the ZZT album (Tiga & Zombie Nation) Parties Over Los Angeles.  Check this out.
Fran, I will be playing this at your party.
An album I’ve just started getting into is Brothers by The Black Keys.  They’ve got a new one out that I’ve not heard anything from yet so I’ve gone back to one they released a few years ago.  Check this out.
Other tunes that I’ve been listening to are….
Anyway enough of me going on about tunes.  I’d just like to say a big hello to Ian & Martha who are getting married next month at Bolton Abbey.  I hope they have a great day.  Also a happy birthday to Dibble in Feb too.  I won’t tell you how old he’ll be.
